2010 French Open Day 2

The top men’s player in the world was on court today.  Roger Federer wasted little time in defeating Peter Luczak to get his title defense started.  Federer played what he called a “perfect game”.  For the clay surface, Federer has even begun using a drop shot, something he doesn’t usually like to do.  Not only is Federer trying to repeat as Roland Garros champion, he is also attempting to hold on to his No. 1 in the world position – for the first time in a year, his points position is being threatened – not by one, but by two players, clay court master Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic, the No. 3 seed, also won his opening match today, defeating Evgeny Korolev in 4 sets.

Other top men in action were No. 4 Andy Murray, who needed 5 sets to defeat Richard Gasquet.

Americans Taylor Dent, John Isner, and Mardy Fish all advanced to the 2nd Round.

There were no surprises in the women’s group today, as top-seed Serena Williams got off to a slow start, but defeated Stefanie Voegele in straight sets.  No. 3 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 4 Jelena Jankovic, and No. 5 Elena Dementieva all had little difficulty advancing.

Samantha Stosur (7) and Agnieszka Radwanska (8) each won in straight sets to round out the top-10 action.  Fan-favorite and former champion Ana Ivanovic was also a winner today.
