2011 Australian Open – Day 3

The big names keep winning in Melbourne, highlighted by a close call for defending champion and No. 2 seed Roger Federer.  Federer needed 5 sets to get past Gilles Simon, whom he had never before defeated.  Simon attacked Federer’s backhand repeatedly, and Federer responded with 51errors.  After dropping 2 straight sets, Federer got back on track and took the match 6-3 in the 5th.

Novak Djokovic (3) dropped a set before dispatching Ivan Dodig.  Tomas Berdych (6) also dropped a set against Phillipp Kohlschreiber.  Andy Roddick (8) was the only man in the top-10 who won in straight sets, beating Igor Kunitsyn.  Fernando Verdasco (9) needed 5 to get past Janko Tipsarevic.

American Mardy Fish (16), after handily winning the opening set, just as quickly lost the next 3 against Tommy Robredo.

Many of the women’s matches went the distance as well, with Venus Williams (4) dropping the opening set before defeating Sandra Zahlavova.   Francesca Schiavone (6) also dropped a set against Rebecca Marino.

No. 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki only lost 1 game in her win over Vania King.  King’s loss leaves Venus Williams as the only American left in the draw.

Victoria Azarenka (8) and Na Li (9) each won in straight sets to advance to the 3rd round.  Maria Sharapova (15) also advanced, despite committing 39 unforced errors in her straight set victory over Virginie Razzano.
