2011 Australian Open – Day 4

Players at the top keep rolling at the 2011 Australian Open.  All but one (Sam Querrey) of the top 16 men have moved into the 3rd round.

No. 1 Rafael Nadal only lost a total of 4 games in his 2nd round match.  Nadal has yet to face any opposition.  No. 4 Robin Soderling and No. 5 Andy Murray each won in straight sets as well, as did No. 7 David Ferrer.  Ferrer’s victory came at the expense of American Michael Russell.  No. 10 Mikhail Youzhny had a struggle, requiring 5 sets to advance past Blaz Kavcic of Slovakia.  John Isner (20) of the USA also needed 5 sets to get past Radek Stepanek.

For the women, No. 2 Vera Zvonareva dropped a set against Bojana Jovanovski.  No. 3 Kim Clisters continued to dominate, easily winning in straight sets as did No. 5 Samantha Stosur, the hometown Australian.

No. 7 Jelena Jankovic is another former No. 1 who is struggling.  Jankovic lost to unseeded Shuai Peng in straight sets.  The reeling Jankovic has now lost 7 of her last 8 matches.

No. 10 Shahar Peer had little trouble in her win over Sorana Cirstea.
