2011 Wimbledon 1st Round

The 2011 Wimbledon Championships started off almost as expected.  Many of the opening day matches were postponed due to rain and the schedule had to be jumbled accordingly.

The top Men’s seeds all advanced easily.

Of 9 American men playing, 6 advanced to the 2nd round, led by Andy Roddick (8) and Mardy Fish (10).  One of the most anticipated matches pitted John Isner in a rematch of last year’s record-setting epic versus Frenchman Nicolas Mahut.  Isner needed 2 tiebreakers in his 3 set victory, about 8 hours faster than in 2010.

The Women’s draw featured the return of Venus and Serena Williams.  The sisters, who have dominated Wimbledon for the last decade, have been absent from tennis for most of the past year.  Little rust showed, however, as both sisters easily won their opening matches.

The biggest upsets of the opening round were Samantha Stosur (10) and Jelena Jankovic (15).  Stosur fell in straight sets to Melinda Czink while Jankovic put up a fight for 3 sets before falling to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

The women’s opening round is delayed due to the weather.
