American men exit Wimbledon

Andy Roddick (5) went out after having his powerful serve broken just once.  Unfortunately, just like last year, once is enough when it comes in a 5th set overtime.  Unlike last year, this was not the final, and his opponent was Yen-Hsun Lu, ranked 86th in the world, not No. 1 Roger Federer.  Lu played the match of his life for 4 1/2 hours.  Roddick won almost every statistical category except one – break-point conversions.  Roddick was only 1 of 8 on break points while Lu was 1 of 2, including the final game.

Another American, Sam Querrey (18) fell to Andy Murray (4) in straight sets.  Murray has not dropped a set in this event.

No. 1 Roger Federer hardly broke a sweat against Jurgen Melzer (16).  Rafael Nadal (2) had no trouble with Paul-Henri Mathieu.

In a highly entertaining match, No. 3 Novak Djokovic needed 4 sets to overcome Lleyton Hewitt (15).  Robin Soderling (6) had his closest match yet, defeating David Ferrer (9) in 5 sets.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (10) won against Julien Benneteau (32)  and Tomas Berdych (12) ousted Daniel Brands.

The highlighted Ladies matches had Serena Williams (1) getting revenge against Maria Sharapova (16) and Kim Clijsters (8) coming from behind to beat Justine Henin (17).

No. 2 Venus Williams defeated Jarmila Groth in straight sets.  Kaia Kenepi beat Klara Zakopalova.

There were several upsets for the women, as No. 3 Caroline Wozniacki fell to Petra Kvitova, No. 4 Jelena Jankovic retired while losing against Vera Zvonareva (21), Na Li (9) defeated Agnieszka Radwanska (7),  and Tsvetana Pironkova ousted Marion Bartoli (11).
