Byron Nelson tribute opens at his namesake event

Irving, Texas, May 20, 2010 – The HP Byron Nelson Championship launched a tribute this week to the tournament’s namesake, giving fans the unique opportunity to learn about Byron Nelson and his many accomplishments both on and off the golf course.

“A Tribute to Byron Nelson” is open in the Championship merchandise tent throughout the tournament. Fans can stroll through the shadows of the legend, and learn about “Byron the Man” and “Bryon the Golfer”.

Patrons are also encouraged to leave their own memories of Nelson in a guest book located in the middle of the tribute. In addition, fans can peruse many of Nelson’s personal possessions. Included in the display cases are some of Byron’s golf clubs as well as many of his wood carvings from his workshop at Fairway Ranch. Other notable displays include photos and a video about Nelson’s distinguished golf career.

“Byron left such a lasting legacy, and through the tribute, we hope to teach future generations about what Byron stood for and how he positively affected so many over his 94 years,” said Tournament Chairman George Conant.  “He made so many incredible contributions to our tournament and our charity, and I encourage everyone to take the time to visit the tribute.”

Golf enthusiasts can also pick up a copy of the recently released book “Life with Lord Byron” by Peggy Nelson, Byron’s widow, in the merchandise tent. Nelson will be signing copies of her new book at the tribute on Friday and Saturday from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

“It was fun to go back and revisit some of the sweet memories and fun memories,” Nelson said. “He was so much fun to live with, and the main reason for writing the book wasn’t just for romance, which was unusual not only because of how it (the relationship) happened initially but because of what he was like to live with… so writing this book was fairly easy.”

The merchandise tent is open daily throughout the tournament from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information on Nelson’s book signing and “A Tribute to Byron Nelson”, visit www.hpbnc.org.
