Cowboys Hold Off Eagles

The Dallas Cowboys squeaked past the Philadelphia Eagles 38-33 Sunday night at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.  It is the first victory for the Cowboys on Sunday night in 8 tries.

As has been the custom, Dallas fell behind early 14-3 and went into the locker room at half trailing 17-10.

The Cowboys took the 2nd half kickoff and drove 80 yards to tie the game at 17-17.   Again the Cowboys defense could not stop the Eagles, who drove right back down the field for another score.  In what would become a series of neither team playing defense, both teams would score on every possession through the rest of the game.  Dallas sealed the victory by recovering a Philadelphia onside kick attempt and letting time expire.

Dallas quarterback Tony Romo had one of the best games of his career, completing 22 of 27 passes for 303 yards and 3 touchdowns with no interceptions.  Along the way, Romo became the Cowboys all-time leader in touchdown passes.  His favorite receiver was Jason Witten who caught 6 passes for 108 yards.

Wide receiver Dez Bryant caught 6 passes for 98 yards and 2 touchdowns and Miles Austin also scored on one of his 2 receptions.

DeMarco Murray returned from injury to spark the Dallas running game, which gained 123 yards, 83 from Murray on 23 carries.

The Dallas defense was pushed all over the field by an Eagle offense comprised of rookies and mid-tier players.  The Eagles gained 423 yards and converted 60% of 3rd downs.  Philadelphia only punted twice in the game.

The Cowboys again failed on special teams, allowing the Eagles to score on a 98-yard punt return as the Cowboys were trying to run the clock out.

Dallas is still alive in the playoff hunt at 6-6, but will need to play significantly better against the remaining teams on their schedule, all of whom are also still alive for a playoff spot.
