Dallas Mavericks Acquire Five-Time All-Star Klay Thompson
|The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have acquired five-time All-Star Klay Thompson and a future second-round pick as part of a six-team sign-and-trade deal in exchange for guard/forward Josh Green and a future second-round pick.
The transaction is part of the first six-team trade in NBA history.
“We’re thrilled to have Klay join us in Dallas,” stated Dallas Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison. “As one of the league’s greatest shooters who competes on both ends, we feel Klay is a perfect fit for our team. He adds a strong, experienced veteran voice that will help us continue to build on the success we’ve seen in recent years. Klay’s championship experience, clutch performances and calm demeanor under pressure exemplify what it takes to win in the NBA at the highest level. He will help us continue to grow towards our goal of winning another championship.”
Thompson (6-6, 220), a five-time All-Star (2015-19), helped the Warriors to four NBA championships (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022) in an eight-year span from 2015 to 2022. A former teammate of Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving on the U.S. national teams that won gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain, Thompson holds career averages of 19.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 32.6 minutes in 793 games (742 starts) with Golden State while shooting 45.8% (5,794-12,782 FG) from the field, 41.3% (2,481-6,010 3FG) from 3-point range and 85.8% (1,462-1,704 FT) from the foul line.
The 34-year-old ranks sixth in league history in 3-point field goals made (2,481) and is just 80 3-pointers shy of passing Reggie Miller (2,560) for fifth all-time. He has made at least 100 3-pointers in each of his 11 seasons, including 200-or-more treys nine times and a career-high 301 triples in 2022-23, and was crowned the 3-point Contest champion at All-Star Weekend in 2016. Thompson has also shot at least 80.0% from the free-throw line in 10 of his 11 seasons, including a league-high (career-high) 92.7% (127-137 FT) from the stripe in 2023-24.
Among his numerous accolades, Thompson is a two-time All-NBA Third Team honoree (2014-15, 2015-16) and was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2018-19. He holds the NBA record for most 3-pointers made in a game (14) and most points scored in a quarter (37).
The Los Angeles native is the son of Mychal Thompson, the first overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft, who won back-to-back NBA championships with the Lakers in 1987 and 1988. Mychal and Klay are one of five father-son duos in league history to each win an NBA title (along with Matt Guokas Sr. and Matt Guokas Jr., Rick Barry and Brent Barry, Bill Walton and Luke Walton, and Gary Payton and Gary Payton II).
Thompson will wear No. 31 for the Mavericks.
Green (6-6, 210) was selected by Dallas with the 18th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and averaged 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 20.3 minutes in 223 games (62 starts) over his four seasons with the franchise.
