Defending Champ Baradach Faces Broadcaster in US Open Sectional Qualifyer

ARLINGTON, Texas Former University of Texas player and current Longhorn Network television color analyst Jon Wiegand will face Artem Baradach, the defending champion, in the mens finals of the 2012 Texas US Open Sectional Qualifying Tournament, on Saturday, June 23 at 9 a.m.

They are playing at the Arlington Tennis Center to represent the Texas section in the US Open National Playoffs and the chance to play in the US Open.

In the semifinals, Baradach the former Southern Methodist University player who earned 2010-11 First Team All-Conference USA honors in singles and doubles defeated recent Cedar Hill High School graduate Charles Boyce 6-3, 6-2. Wiegand played for the University of Texas from 2006-10 and is a color analyst for the network.

DAY 5 Womens Semifinals Round Up

Elena Korodlaimi, a sophomore at Stephen F. Austin State University will take on 16-year old Peggy Porter of Dallas in the womens finals of the 2012 Texas US Open Sectional Qualifying Tournament, on Saturday, June 23 at 10 a.m.

Korodlaimi defeated Texas Tech University team member Samantha Adams 6-2, 6-3 while Porter, a 16-year old nationally ranked junior player who was the recipient of a 2011 US Open girls singles championship wild card, beat Adrien Jenkins 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the finals.

Korodlaimi, a native of Lamias, Greece, as a freshman at SFA played No. 1-3 singles and No. 1 doubles, helping the team to make its first NCAA Championships first-round appearance and the teams first Southland Conference tournament title.

All the action is taking place at the Arlington Tennis Center. Mashona Washington, younger sister MaliVai Washington, defeated Rosalia Alda last year to win the Texas US Open womens tournament.

DAY 5 – Mixed Doubles Semifinals Round Up

Defending champions Samantha and Harrison Adams for the second consecutive day played against 14-year olds. This time beating the dynamic duo of Riley Reeves (14) of Saginaw and Parker Wynn (14) of North Richland Hills, 6-1, 6-0. The win puts the Adams back into the mixed doubles finals of the 2012 Texas US Open Sectional Qualifying Tournament, on Saturday, June 23 at noon.

They will face the team of Josh Hagar of Austin and Peggy Porter of Dallas. Hagar / Porter advanced to the finals by beating the Round Rock brother and sister team of Miguel and Rosalia Alda 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (7).

The mixed doubles will be the second match of the day for Porter who is playing in the womens singles finals earlier that morning.

US Open National Playoffs

The US Open National Playoffs presented by playtennis.com is in its third year as a series of 13 sectional qualifying tournaments. The mens singles, womens singles and mixed doubles champions from each sectional qualifying tournament will advance to the US Open National Playoffs Championship, which will be held in conjunction with the New Haven Open at Yale presented by First Niagara, an Emirates Airline US Open Series event. The US Open National Playoffs Mens Singles and Womens Singles Championship will be held Aug. 17-20. The US Open National Playoffs Mixed Doubles Championship will be held Aug. 22-25.

The US Open National Playoffs mens and womens singles champions earn a wild card into the US Open Qualifying Tournament, held the week prior to the US Open. The US Open National Playoffs mixed doubles champions receive a main-draw wild card into the 2012 US Open.
