The Dallas Mavericks won their second straight game Wednesday night at the American Airlines Center, beating the Phoenix Suns 98-89.

Dirk Nowitzki appeared in his 1,000th career regular-season game, becoming the 98th player in NBA history to accomplish the feat. He totaled a team-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds and a team-high seven assists for Dallas in the win. Jason Terry (18) and Lamar Odom (15) combined for 33 points off the Mavericks’ bench. Marcin Gortat posted a double-double (game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds) for Phoenix in the loss.

Dallas utilized a 15-3 run (from the 11:13 mark of the fourth quarter through the 7:48 mark of the period) to break open a 21-point (94-73) advantage.  The run began and ended with 3-pointers from Jason Terry (assisted by Dirk Nowitzki both times).

The Mavericks’ bench outscored the Suns’ bench, 51-21.  Jason Terry talked about the success of the players coming off the bench, “The second unit’s goal is to come in and impact the game on both ends of the floor. It’s not good enough to just go out and play. We want to dominate every time we step on the floor. When you’ve got guys like Lamar Odom, Vince Carter and myself, these are All-Star potential guys and anybody we face, we should have the upper hand.”

Dallas handed out 30 assists in the game (compared to Phoenix’s 18).

The Mavericks (3-4) play Thursday in San Antonio.
