The Dallas Mavericks beat the New Orleans Hornets 104-100 on Friday. Tne Mavericks proved that they have the ability to win close and highly contested games last night.

Dallas had an exceptional night on the defensive end of the ball blocking a franchise-high 17 shots. Center Bernard James led the Mavericks with seven blocks, the most since teammate Brendan Wright’s 7 block game last season.

The game seemed over after a three pointer by Hornets forward Ryan Anderson put the team ahead 100-96 with 55 seconds left in the game. Guard Mike James answered back with a three pointer to give the Mavericks a one point deficit.

After a Hornets missed shot to seal the game, Dallas guard Vince Carter hit a clutch three-pointer with 06.5 seconds left to give the Mavericks 102-100 lead and ultimately the win.

“The way Vince [Carter] has reinvented himself with us — as an off-the-bench, instant-offense, playmaker, defender, all-around guy — I think validates him as a Hall of Fame candidate,” said Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle.

Carter had a careen night passing Gary Payton on the all-time scoring list. He finished with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks with 25 points.

The Mavericks are now 2-0 since the all star break and hope to continue the streak as they take on the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. Tip-off is in Dallas at 12 p.m.
