Mavs Sign Wesley Matthews

DeAndre Jordan bailed on the Dallas Mavericks to re-sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, but shooting guard Wesley Matthews kept his word and signed with the Mavs on Thursday.

The Mavericks also announced that they acquired center Zaza Pachulia from the Milwaukee Bucks for a future second-round draft pick.

Matthews, a free agent from the Portland Trail Blazers, reportedly signed a four-year deal contract he agreed to last week worth $70 million.

After Jordan rejected the Mavericks, owner Mark Cuban told Matthews that he could opt out of their agreement. Matthews declined and signed anyway.

“I can’t print his exact response, but suffice it to say he is excited to play for our Mavs,” Cuban wrote to fans on his Cyber Dust app. “Wes Matthews is exactly the type of player we want in a Mavs uniform and our fans will love him.”

Matthews, 28, was signed to fill a scoring void created when the Mavericks lost free agent Monta Ellis to the Indiana Pacers. He averaged 15.9 points per game last season but was injured in the team’s 60th regular-season game and missed the postseason.

Matthews could miss early season games with the Mavericks but should be ready to play in December.

He is a 39 percent shooter from 3-point range.

The 6-foot-11 Pachulia averaged 8.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 73 games, including 45 starts, for the Bucks last season.

In 12 seasons and 815 career NBA games with the Orlando Magic, Atlanta Hawks and Bucks, Pachulia has career averages of 7.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists.
