Mee Earns Wildcard For Challenger of Dallas
DALLAS TX – John Mee defeated Jon Wiegand Sunday at the Challenger of Dallas Wildcard Tournament held at T Bar M Racquet Club. Mee, a Highland Park resident, conquered Wiegand 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-5.
Mee, who attends classes at the Spring Creek Academy in Plano recently signed a letter of intent to play tennis at the University of Texas in Austin, will fill the wildcard berth at the Challenger of Dallas in February, 2014.
Wiegand, a former University of Texas tennis standout, was facing elimination at 3-5 in the third set with Mee serving, but broke back and eventually evened the match at 5 all. However he could not hold off Mee’s relentless baseline attack and ultimately succumbed in a match which lasted nearly 2 1/2 hours.
In earlier semi-final action, Jon Wiegand defeated Rodolfo Bustamante 7-5, 6-2. John Mee def Charles Boyce 4-1, ret (injury).
The Challenger of Dallas, in its 16th year, is the largest USTA event in North Texas. The United States Tennis Association rates the $100,000 USTA Pro Circuit men’s tournament one of its top tour stops. The tournament benefits and supports many programs including the Dallas Tennis Association’s “Invest in a Child”, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Habitat for Humanity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and the Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation.
The event, which has attracted such international tennis champions as the Bryan brothers, James Blake, David Nalbandian, Nikolay Davydenko and Dmitry Tursunov, has received national television coverage over the last few years as well as live webcasting.
