NORFOLK, Va. -North Texas junior Franziska Sprinkmeyer clinched the match, for the first time in her career, with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Southern Miss; advancing the Mean Green to Saturday’s semifinals against the No. 2 seed Rice.

“We are excited to play in the semis against a formidable opponent,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “It’s a tremendous challenge but a great opportunity for us.”

North Texas overcame USM 4-0 in Friday’s quarterfinals of the Conference USA championship, with Sprinkmeyer securing the victory at the No.6 spot against USM’s Kathrin Waidner.

Junior Kseniya Bardabush led the way for North Texas earning the first point of the match, at the No. 1 spot, quickly capturing a win against the Golden Eagles Carolin Drescher 6-0, 6-1.

“It’s good to get the first match behind us,” Lama said. “The key was getting off to a quick 2-0 lead against a team having a great run in the tournament.”

Next to finish was sophomore Agustina Valenzuela who took the No. 4 spot 6-1, 6-2, keeping the Mean Green ahead.

Freshman Anastasiya Shestakova captured the third match point at the No. 2 spot in her third set after falling to Mahitha Dadireddy in the second (6-2, 1-6, 6-2).

Saturday’s semifinals will begin at noon ET as the No. 2 Owls take on the No. 3 seed Mean Green.
