SPRINGFIELD, MO.  – For the first time in nearly a month the Frisco RoughRiders gave up double-digit runs, falling 10-4 to the Springfield Cardinals on Wednesday night at Hammons Field. Frisco last allowed double-digits in the run column last on April 27 in an 11-0 defeat at home against Corpus Christi.

Richard Bleier was hit hard in the early going. The Cardinals (24-19) scored six runs on six hits in the first two frames off Bleier. The big hit came in the second inning. Already behind 3-0, Bleier allowed the first two runners of the inning to reach on a double and an infield single. Bleier got the next two batters to line out and pop out and looked as if he might get out of the jam. Ruben Gotay, however, homered to left to give the Cardinals a commanding 6-0 lead.

Bleier then settled in to post a couple of scoreless innings on the board, and Ryan Rodebaugh tossed two as well to keep the game from running away from Frisco (24-21).

It was 6-0 entering the sixth inning when Frisco finally got going offensively. Springfield starterAnthony Ferrara had scattered five Frisco hits over the first five innings, but he walked Guilder Rodriguez to lead off the inning and, after a strikeout of Brett Nicholas, hit Tomas Telis to put two aboard with just one out. Chih-Hsien Chiang brought home two with a looping line drive to put Frisco on the board at 6-2 Cardinals. After a pop-out by Ryan Strausborger on a bunt attempt,Teodoro Martinez doubled to put two in scoring position, and Alejandro Selen came

through with a two-run single to make it a two-run game.

Bullpen stalwart Roman Mendez entered the ballgame in the bottom of the seventh for the RoughRiders. In 13 appearances, Mendez had allowed just one earned run over 20 innings; Wednesday he surrendered four on three hits and two walks, all coming in seventh. The four-run inning put the game out of reach for Frisco who didn’t get a man in scoring position in the final third of the game. The ‘Riders fell 10-4.

Rodriguez had a three hit night, going 3-for-4 with a walk, although he did ground into the game-ending double play.

Bleier (0-1) took the loss in his second Texas League start. He went four innings and allowed six runs on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Ferrara (4-3) earned the win.
