RoughRiders Lose At San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The San Antonio Missions defeated the Frisco RoughRiders behind the arm of James Needy, 9-1, on Sunday night at Wolff Stadium. The Missions scored four runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good after a throwing error extended the frame.

Tied 1-1 in the seventh inning, the Missions loaded the bases with no outs. Frisco starter Chad Bell struck out the next two batters and looked to get out of the jam, but a throwing error from Trever Adams on a ground ball from Jose Rondon scored two. Luis Domoromo later knocked a two-run single and San Antonio led 5-1.

Needy (3-0) dominated on the mound in his fourth start for the Missions this season. The right-hander struck out seven and allowed only two hits and one run in the complete game effort to pick up his third win with the club.

Duanel Jones put the Missions on the board in the bottom half of the second inning with a home run. The solo-shot, his fourth of the year, put San Antonio on top 1-0.

Frisco tied the contest in the seventh inning. Preston Beck worked a one-out walk and was knocked home on a RBI-double off the bat of Adams to make it 1-1.

San Antonio added insurance in the eighth frame. Hunter Renfroe pounded a two-run homer to make it 7-1. Later in the inning, a fielding error from Luis Marte allowed two more Missions to cross the plate. Needy pitched a scoreless ninth to finish off the complete game and the Missions defeated the Riders in the series opener, 9-1.

Bell (3-10) dropped the decision for the Riders over 6 2/3 innings of work. He allowed five runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out six.

LHP Victor Payano heads to the mound for the Frisco RoughRiders on Monday night. He opposes San Antonio’s RHP Dennis O’Grady in the 7:05 start. Frisco returns to Dr Pepper Ballpark July 23 for a seven game home stand against Corpus Christi and Midland.
