Seeds fall, Oudin soars at Memphis

Memphis, TN – Upsets continue at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships at the Racquest Club of Memphis.  No. 2 seed Fernando Verdasco was shocked in straight sets by Jeremy Chardy.  Verdasco, fresh off his win in San Jose, never got in sync as Chardy got stronger and more confident throughout the match.

Earlier in the day, No. 7 Philipp Kohlschreiber was also ousted, losing to Evgeny Korolev in straight sets.  Korolev was the aggresor from the start, using sheer force to take both sets 7-5.

The only seeded man to win was Tomas Berdych, defeating Ryan Sweeting.

The seeds were not safe for Men’s Doubles either, as the No. 1 team of Mahesh Bhupathi/Max Mirnyi lost to Eric Butorac/Rajeev Ram in the opening round.  The No. 2 team of Mardy Fish/ Mark Knowles slipped by with a tiebreak victory over Johan Brunstrom/Jean-Julien Rojer.  The 3rd seed team, Marcelo Melo/Bruno Soares, was upset by the U.S. team of John Isner/Sam Querrey.

Things were a little more stable for the Women’s group, highlighted by the feature match of No. 2 Melanie Oudin defeating Alexa Glatch.  Oudin was never in trouble for the match, though the play on the court was much closer than the score of 6-2, 6-2 would indicate.

No. 8 Elena Baltacha won against Renata Voracova.

Not all of the seeded women were safe, as No. 4 Lucie Hradecka lost to Karolina Sprem in straight sets.
