Shahar Peer Accepts Wildcard into Texas Tennis Open

The 2011 Texas Tennis Open, which will feature many of today’s top WTA professional tennis stars announced today that Shahar Peer of Israel has accepted a wildcard to play in the inaugural event. Peer, who began the year in the WTA rankings at No. 11 (as of January 31, 2011), is the highest ranked Israeli professional tennis player in the history of the country (man or woman).

The Texas Tennis Open, which is part of the WTA, is considered an ‘International Level’ tournament with prize money of $220,000, and features a singles draw of 32 players and a doubles draw of 16 teams. The tournament, which will play host to an international field of players, will take place August 20 through August 27, 2011 at the Hilton DFW Lakes Hotel in Grapevine, Texas.

“We are extremely pleased that Shahar Peer has accepted a wildcard into the tournament and will be added to

our already fantastic field of players,” said Chris Giordano, Texas Tennis Open Tournament Director. “With her addition, we now have 12 of the top 50 players in the world and 7 players who were seeded at this year’s Wimbledon championships,” he added.

 

Peer obtained a career-high WTA ranking of No. 11 in January 2011, by making it to the 3rd round of the Australian Open. Last month Peer was the top seed at the inaugural WTA Citi Open in College Park Maryland, where she eventually fell in the finals to second-seeded WTA tour veteran, Nadia Petrova of Russia 7-5, 6-2.

Other notable players in the field ranked outside the top 50 include Gisela Dulko, who currently holds a WTA doubles ranking of No. 4, Sania Mirza who is currently ranked No. 11 in doubles on the WTA tour, and veteran player Kimiko Date-Krumm, who has won 8 WTA singles titles and 1 WTA doubles title in her career. In addition, Melanie Oudin, the 2009 U.S. Open quarter-finalist, will play in the event
