SMU Advances At ITA Texas Regionals

FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) – Sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova and freshman Dasha Sharapova each won their first two singles matches on day one of the ITA Texas Regional to reach the round of 32. Six Mustangs competed on day one of the Regionals.

Bulgakova (6-2) won each of her two singles matches in straight sets. In the round of 128, she defeated UTPA sophomore Christel Amsallem, 6-0, 6-1. She then moved onto the round of 32 after she beat UTSA freshman Lina Hallgren, 6-0, 6-2. Bulgakova now faces Texas Tech junior Kenna Kilgo.

Sharapova (3-1) won each of her two singles matches in straight sets as well. In her first match, Sharapova defeated UTA freshman Ekaterina Tugarinova, 6-2, 6-4. In the round of 64 she beat Texas Tech freshman Lynn Kiro, 6-3, 6-4. In the round of 32, Sharapova’s opponent is Rice senior Dominique Harmath.

In addition to Bulgakova and Sharapova, sophomore Yana Erkeeva (2-3) and freshmen Anna Kate Anderson (1-3) and Macie Elliott (3-2) all competed in

singles matches for the Mustangs posting 1-1 records, respectively.

Anderson defeated North Texas sophomore Dane Jonbert, 7-5, 6-1 for the first singles victory of her young career.

In doubles, SMU had a combined record of 3-3 as three different doubles combos paired up together for the first time in their careers. Similarly, each duo recorded a 1-1 mark on the day.

Bulgakova paired with Elliott for the first time this season as they defeated UTA freshmen Angeles De Los Rios and Astrid Gehre, 8-4. In the round of 32, the duo fell to TCU sophomores Mimi Fotopoulos and Monika Sirilova, 8-7.
