TULSA, Okla. (SMU) – The SMU Mustangs swept four singles matches after dropping the opening doubles point to defeat Illinois State, 4-1, in Tulsa, Okla., on Sunday morning.

Arturs Kazijevs, Alex Sanders, Mischa Nowicki and Arkidjas Slobodkins each picked up singles victories in straight sets. Kazijevs won in the No. 1 position over Jakub Eisner, 6-5; 6-3. Sanders defeated Urh Krajnc, 6-3; 6-2, and Nowicki beat Jacob Wilson 6-2; 6-5, in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, while Slobodkins won at No. 6 against Dylan Steffens.

Illinois State tallied the first point of the match with doubles wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.

“We played great in singles after starting slow in doubles and losing the doubles point,” SMU Head Coach Carl Neufeld said. “I was especially excited with the two freshmen’s (Olaya and Slobodkins) singles performance against a spirited Illinois State team.”

The win marked the fourth straight over Illinois State in the program series. Kazijevs’ singles win was the 40th of his career, while Slobodkins picked up his first collegiate singles win in his second career match.

The Mustangs will continue play in Tulsa tomorrow at 10 a.m. against No. 30 Drake.
