SMU W-Tennis Defeats UTSA

DALLAS (SMU) –The SMU women’s tennis team has now won eight of its last 11 matches as the Mustangs defeated UTSA, 4-2 at T Bar M Racquet Club in Dallas on Sunday. Freshman Macie Elliott (14-16) led the Mustangs as she won her third straight match after beating Roadrunner junior Irene Gonzalez in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 6 singles match. SMU (9-11) completed an undefeated week with its win today as the Mustangs beat Middle Tennessee (4-3) on Thursday and Texas State (7-0) on Friday.
“We completed our goal by going 3-0 this week,” head coach Kati Gyulai said. “We did a great job by staying disciplined and I am very proud of our team.”
SMU took the opening doubles point and then won at the No. 3, 4 and 6 singles positions to secure the match victory over UTSA (10-8).
In addition to Elliott in singles, sophomore Hristina Dishkova (18-14) won at
the No. 3 singles position as she beat Roadrunner senior Isabelle Jonsson in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6. Sophomore Yana Erkeeva (18-9) won at the No. 4 spot as she beat sophomore Nicole Karaklis in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles, Dishkova and junior Holly Verner improved their overall record to 12-4 following their impressive 8-1 win at the No. 2 position over UTSA junior Daniela Garcia-Diaz and sophomore Alena Shichkova. Securing the doubles point for SMU was sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova and freshman Dasha Sharapova (15-4) and getting the sweep for the Mustangs was freshmen Anna Kate Anderson and Elliott (2-0) as each tandem won at the No. 1 and 3 positions, respectively.
SMU is back in action on April 12 when the Mustangs take on Louisiana Tech at 12 p.m. in the team’s final regular season match at the Northwood Country Club.
