SMU W-Tennis Loses At UT Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas (SMU) – Freshman Dasha Sharapova (16-9) won her third straight match as she defeated UT Arlington freshman Astrid Gehre in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, but the Mavericks proved to be too strong on their home court as they defeated the Mustangs, 4-3 at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas on Wednesday.

UTA (9-7) quickly took the opening doubles point after winning at the No. 2 and 3 spots and then won at the No. 1, 4 and 5 singles positions to secure the dual match victory over the Mustangs (6-11).

In addition to Sharapova, sophomore Hristina Dishkova improved to 17-13 overall this season as she defeated UT Arlington junior Giada D’ortona in a thrilling three set match, 6-3, 6-7, 14-12 while freshman Anna Kate Anderson (13-12) improved to an outstanding 7-2 at the No. 6 singles position after she beat Christine Foote in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6.

In doubles, sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Sharapova (12-4) notched the lone win for SMU in doubles as the tandem defeated freshman Ekaterina Tugarinova and Gehre in the No. 1 doubles match, 8-6.

SMU finishes the regular season with four straight home matches beginning next week on April, 3 as the Mustangs host Middle Tennessee State at 4 p.m. at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas.
