SMU W-Tennis Loses In AAC Conference Tournament

TAMPA, Fla. (SMU) — The sixth-seeded SMU women’s tennis team fell 4-0 against No. 41 ranked, three-seed and host South Florida in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament on Friday. SMU finished its season with a 10-12 overall record.

The Mustangs fell behind early as USF took the opening doubles point after winning at the No. 2 and 3 positions. In singles, the Bulls won at the No. 1, 2 and 5 spots to secure the dual match victory.

SMU boasted a young team this season, as the Mustangs had no seniors on its roster. In addition, seven of the Ponies eight student-athletes were freshmen and sophomores. Sophomore Yana Erkeeva and freshman Dasha Sharapova led SMU this season; these two led their respective classes as they have posted overall records of 19-9 and 17-12, respectively.

SMU sported a 12-5 overall record in the No. 1 doubles position this season and were led by sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Sharapova as that tandem recorded an outstanding mark of 11-3 in the No. 1 position. Overall, the duo earned an overall record of 16-4.
