SMU W-Tennis Sweeps Northwestern State

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s tennis team made quick work of the Northwestern State Lady Demons on their way to a 7-0 win at the Ann and Brad Brookshire Family Pavilion. The Mustangs now move to 5-0 on the season with their second sweep in three matches.

The match started off fast for SMU as the No. 2 doubles pair of Dasha Sharapova and Ana Perez-Lopez won their match 6-0 over Polina Mutel and Alzbeta Veverkova. The No. 3 doubles pair of Macie Elliott and Mary Wright earned their first win of the spring, winning their match against Barbora Kollarova and Ilijana Ivic 6-1.

“I feel like we did a really good job of being aggressive at the net, playing our game and not theirs,” Elliott said. “For us to be consistent we need to stay calm and keep a level head during the course of the match.”

Singles played out in a similar fashion as Perez-Lopez (No. 5) got things started for the Mustangs winning 6-1, 6-1 over Kollarova and Wright (No. 6) defeated Ivic 6-0, 6-2 to put SMU up 3-0. Sharapova clinched

the match win for the Mustangs, beating Veverkova 6-1, 6-3. Sharapova is now 8-0 combined in the spring season and feels more comfortable with her game as the season progresses.

“Now that we’re a few games in I’m starting to gain more and more confidence to take big shots,” Sharapova said.

Seniors Hristina Dishkova (No. 1), Vaszilisza Bulgakova (No. 2), and Yana Erkeeva (No. 3) finished up their wins shortly after the match was clinched. DIshkova beat Natalya Krutova 6-3, 6-2, Bulgakova won over Iryna Vardanian 6-3, 6-4, and Erkeeva defeated Mutel 6-0, 6-2.

SMU will play 37th ranked Oklahoma University this Saturday, Feb. 13 in their #PerunaGoesPink match at the SMU Tennis Complex at 1:00 p.m. CT. The Sooners will be the first ranked opponent for the Mustangs this season, a match-up the team is looking forward to.

“Last year we lost a tough 4-3 match but now we’re an older, more experienced team and we’ll be playing at home,” Elliott said. “We’re ready.”
