SMU W-Tennis Undefeated This Weekend

PLANO, Texas (SMU) – The SMU women’s tennis team claimed seven championships, five singles and two doubles, at the Collin College Fall Open in Plano, Texas, this weekend. The five student-athletes who represented the Mustangs at the Plano tournament did not lose a match.

In singles, junior Vaszilisza Bulgakova topped Collin College’s Sam Bull in the finals of her draw. Sophomore Mary Wright racked up three singles wins on the weekend, including a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Darija Catipovic of Southeastern Oklahoma State in the finals. Wright leads the team with eight singles wins so far this fall season.

Sophomore Anna Kate Anderson notched her singles title by defeating Arkansas-Fort Smith’s Lindsy Pearce, 6-1, 6-0. Fellow sophomoresMacie Elliott and Dasha Sharapova prevailed in their respective singles draws as well. Elliott topped Natalie Landa of Collin College, 6-1, 6-0, and Sharapova defeated Katie Delgado of Tyler Junior College, 6-1, 6-0, for individual titles.

In doubles, Bulgakova and Sharapova, playing together for the first time this fall, won their draw with an 8-4 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State’s Paula Martinez and Reljic. Anderson and Elliott also notched a doubles championship, topping Arkansas-Fort Smith’s Taylor Price and Abby Thompson, 8-4.

The Mustangs will return to the courts for the ITA Regional in Waco, Texas, beginning on Thursday, Oct. 16.
