SMU Women’s Tennis Earns 10th Win

DALLAS — The 74th-ranked SMU women’s tennis team earned its 10th win of the season on Friday, defeating 41st-ranked New Mexico, 4-0, at the Ann and Brad Brookshire Family Pavilion at the SMU Tennis Complex.
“New Mexico plays with a lot of energy,” said head coach Kati Gyulai. “I thought we did a great job of just managing our emotions. We never got bothered. We took the lead and never looked back.”
SMU (10-3) extended its winning streak to three and handed New Mexico (10-6) its fourth loss in its last five matches.
The Mustangs earned the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and 3 slots. Hristina Dishkova and Holly Verner (No. 2) remained a perfect 10-0 in dual match play, defeating Dominique Dulski and Meredith Hopson, 6-2. Yana Erkeeva and Mary Wright (No. 3) clinched the point for the Mustangs, topping Sharon Coone and Dalina Dahlmans, 6-3.
In singles, Vaszilisza Bulgakova extended SMU’s lead to 2-0, defeating Rachana Bhat, 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 5 match. Dishkova then brought the Mustangs within a point of clinching, winning in two sets over Emily Olivier, 6-3, 6-0, in No. 1 singles.
Dasha Sharapova clinched the match for SMU, earning a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Hopson in the No. 3 slot. The match-clinching point was Sharapova’s fifth so far this season.
SMU returns to action tomorrow versus East Carolina at
10 a.m. at the SMU Tennis Complex.
“We have to start out playing with a lot of energy,” said Gyulai of tomorrow’s matchup. “We have to do what we do well and control our emotions.”
