The Southlake Carroll Dragons increased their winning streak to 7-0 Friday night at Dragon Stadium in Southlake, Texas by defeating the Coppell Cowboys 27 to 10. It was a battle of the defenses in the first half, but the Dragon’s stepped up their intensity on both sides of ball in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Both offenses sputtered on their early possessions of the first quarter. With 5:22 remaining in the first, Southlake scored on a Drew Brown 33-yard field goal to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead. The remainder of the quarter belonged to the Coppell offense. The Cowboys mounted a 12 play drive that culminated in a 36-yard field goal by Nick Jordan, tying the game at 3-3.

With 5:40 remaining before halftime, Drew Brown completed another field goal, this time for 43-yards, giving the Dragons their second lead of the game (6-3). On their next series, Coppell fumbled on their own 25-yard line. Eight plays later, Southlake scored on a one yard run by QB Kenny Hill. At the half, Carroll is leading 13 to 3.

The Coppell offense played great ball control in the third quarter, but failed to put any points on the board. Southlake had the ball for only three minutes as the Cowboys put together two long drives. One drive ended with a punt and the other a missed field goal. The quarter ended with the score remaining 13-3.

Early in the fourth quarter Southlake fumbled on the Coppell 46-yard line. Three plays later the Cowboys RB Luke Jenner scored on a 5-yard run to bring Coppell to within 3. With 10:51 remaining in the fourth, the Southlake defense, lead by senior linebackers, Will Davis and Jeff Miller, took over. The Dragon defense held Coppell scoreless for the remainder of the game, while a balanced offensive attack lead by QB Kenny Hill scored 14 unanswered points to secure a 27-10 win.

Next week Southlake Carroll (7-0) takes on Keller Central (6-1). KC is coming off of their first loss of the season and will be eager to beat Southlake and take over the number one spot in District 7-5A.
