Southlake Carroll Defeats Denton Guyer 42-29

It was a shoot out between two potent offenses Friday night at C. H. Collins Stadium in Denton, Texas as Southlake Carroll took on Denton Guyer for the District 7-5A championship. The two teams combined, accumulated almost a 1,000 yards of total offense with Southlake coming out on top 42 to 29.

In the first half both teams were feeling the pressure of a big game atmosphere as evidenced by big plays intermingled with fumbles (two each) and interceptions (one each) by both teams. Denton Guyer’s best play of the first half occurred with 9:14 remaining in the 2nd quarter as running back Sebastain Williams returned a Southlake kick-off for an 80-yard TD run. At halftime, the game was close with Southlake leading by 14 to 13.

Guyer took the lead (19-14) with 9:23 remaining in the 3rd quarter after a 39 yard TD run by Sebastian Williams, who had 235 total rushing yards on the night. But Southlake answered immediately on the first play of their next possession with an 88-yard TD pass from Kenny Hill (SL QB) to Peyton Williams, putting Southlake back on top (21 to 19). With less than 7 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, Southlake intercepted a Denton Guyer pass on the Guyer 47-yard line. It took one play for Southlake to strike again, completing a 50-yard TD pass from Hill to Sabian Holmes. Guyer came back with a TD pass of their own from QB Jerrod Heard to D. J. Breedlove with :27 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Heading into the fourth quarter the score was Southlake 35 and Denton Guyer 26.

6:01 remained in the fourth, when Denton Guyer narrowed the lead to six points (SL 35, GUY 29) after a 44-yard field goal by Josh King. Southlake was able to put the game away when QB Kenny Hill had a 9-yard TD run with :52 remaining in the game. Final score Southlake Carroll 42 and Denton Guyer 29.

Southlake Carroll goes into the playoffs with a 10-0 record and will face Plano East (6-4) at Cowboys Stadium next Saturday at 5 PM. Denton Guyer (7-3) will play Hebron (6-4) at the same venue at 2 PM.
