FORT WORTH, Texas – Sophomore Kenrich Williams scored in double-figures Monday night, but it wasn’t enough as TCU dropped a 66-48 decision to No. 17 Texas at Wilkerson-Greines.

The Horned Frogs, now 14-4 overall and 1-4 in league play, tried to rally late Monday, but in the end couldn’t make enough plays down the stretch. Williams led TCU with 10 points on 4-of-8 from the field, including 1-for-2 from three-point range. Senior Amric Fields followed with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, while Karviar Shepherd and Trey Zeigler chipped in with six rebounds apiece, respectively.

The Longhorns, who moved to 14-4 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12, showed why they are one of the top teams in the nation, shooting 48 percent from the field for the contest. Javan Felix led the way, scoring a game-high 15 points, while Isaiah Taylor chipped in with 13 points on 6-of-12 from the field.

For the game, the Frogs, who came into Monday night with the nation’s No. 2 rated field goal percentage defense, forced Texas into 13 turnovers, while outscoring UT off turnovers and second chance points. In the end though, the Purple and White couldn’t make up the difference.

Early in the second half, Shepherd inched the Frogs closer, finding the bottom of the net on a

reverse layup, but Texas responded on the other end to make it a 37-23 ballgame until Williams exploded to the hole for a bucket at the 16:40 mark.

The Frogs would rattle off four-straight, including a dunk by Zeigler to make it a 37-27 deficit 4 minutes into the period. Texas widened the game a hair by going on a 15-1 run, but TCU continued to battle as Devonta Abron found the bottom of the net with 8:33 left to go in the contest. The junior proceeded to take a charge on the next possession and give the Frogs some life midway through the half.

Down the stretch, Fields and TCU showed some life as the senior dropped a three-ball at the 5:21 mark. A few plays later Abron sunk back-to-back at the free throw line to pull within 14, but Texas answered on the other end with a three-point play.

Williams then buried a three and the Frogs weren’t done in the ballgame yet, pulling within 14, but that was as close as TCU would come the rest of the way, falling for only the fourth time this season.

Texas jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Williams drained a mid-range jumper three minutes into the ballgame to get TCU on the board. A few plays later, the Frogs would pull within 9-4 at the charity stripe and then get defensive as Chris Washburn took a charge at the 16-minute mark to ignite the Frog attack. On the very next possession, Brandon Parrish tipped in the rock and TCU was within three early.

With the scoreboard 13-6 in favor of Texas, Parrish just beat the shot clock, tickling the twine from deep at the 13:34 mark to inch the Purple and White closer at 13-9. A couple of possessions later, Shepherd connected on an old-fashioned three-point play to make it a 17-12 ballgame, but Texas rattled off five-straight to go up by 10 before Williams found the bottom of the net with a little over 9 minutes remaining in the half.

With 6:37 showing on the clock in the opening stanza, Shepherd found Zeigler inside the pain for a tough-minded bucket, which brought the scoreboard to 26-16 down the stretch. The two teams would go back and forth the rest of the half and Texas took a 33-20 lead into intermission.
