TCU W-Soccer Loses To SFA

FORT WORTH – The TCU Horned Frogs suffered their first loss of the season as Stephen F. Austin scored two late goals to take a 2-0 win at Garvey-Rosenthal Sunday afternoon. Maddy Courvoisier led the Frogs with three shots at the net in the loss.
“I thought they were able to connect more passes than we did,” commented head coach Eric Bell. “I didn’t really think the rain delay played a big part in the outcome. I just don’t think we were able to execute properly.”
An evenly matched first half saw the Ladyjacks go into halftime with a slim 8-7 advantage in shots towards the net. Six of those shots came in the first seven minutes of the contest as they put the pressure on trying to get the early goal. A pair of blocked shots was followed by a blast off the foot of Becky Johnson that sailed wide, giving the Frogs a chance to catch their breath.
From that point, TCU took control of the half as it started to push the ball
downfield. Lindsy Schafer had the first golden opportunity to put the Frogs on top as she took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Her attempt ricocheted off the crossbar and the Ladyjacks cleared the rebound to keep the game scoreless.
More pressure from the Frogs earned them a corner kick in the 16th minute. Makenzie Koch fed the ball into the goal box where it landed at the feet of Bobbi Clemmer. Her shot was knocked away by the Ladyjacks keeper and a mad scramble ensued. The Frogs couldn’t get a clean shot and the ball was eventually cleared away.
With 21 minutes to go in the first half, the game was halted for 30 minutes due to rain. Out of the break, the Frogs took the early momentum as they earned a corner kick. Brittany Slyman’s feed to the goal box was kicked just high by Courvoisier.
Another Slyman corner kick in the 38th minute gave the Frogs another chance to take the lead. Her feed was perfect as she connected with the head of Monica Alvarado, whose shot beat the goalkeeper but clanged off the crossbar and caromed out of danger.
But in the second half, Stephen F. Austin took control early. The pressure finally resulted in a goal for the Ladyjacks in the 79th minute as it the lead. Kylie Louw chased the ball to the end line and just kept it from going out of bounds. Her pass upfield found Zuri Prince, who blasted a shot to the far corner for the first goal of the game. The Ladyjacks tacked on another goal with less than a minute to go to take the 2-0 lead.
“Hopefully it’ll be a learning lesson,” remarked Bell. “We’ll see what kind of character we have as we move forward. We’re going to test our character and see if we can’t rebound. It’s uncharted territory for this group. We’ll see how we respond, I’m certain we’ll respond in a positive way but only time will tell.”
TCU (1-1-1) hits the road for the second time this season when it travels to Houston for a match against Rice on Friday night. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
