TCU W-Tennis Improves To 3-0

FORT WORTH – TCU’s women’s tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season Sunday with a 6-1 bettering of Lamar at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
It marks the first time since the spring of 2005 that the Horned Frogs have opened the year winning their first three matches. That season, TCU won six in a row to start the year. Additionally, TCU improved to 7-0 all-time against Lamar.
“I thought Lamar really played well today,” TCU coach Dave Borelli said. “They played hard and I thought we were looking ahead a bit to Wednesday’s match with Baylor. This team is a lot of fun and really competes hard. It’s a pleasure to coach a group that competes as hard as we do.”
The Frogs stepped on the gas early in doubles play, as the No. 31-ranked tandem of Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith rolled to an 8-1 win over Carolina Maso and Carolina Salas. The duo is 2-0 this spring and 10-3 overall.
Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram, the No. 57-ranked doubles team in the nation bounced back from a Saturday defeat to knock off Lamar’s Natalia Mayagoitia and Alicia Porte, 8-3, and clinch the doubles point for TCU.
Denti got right back to work in singles play, improving to 3-0 on the spring with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the expense of Mayagoitia at No. 4 singles. Dating back to last spring, the Bellano, Italy, native has won 10-straight singles matches in the dual season.
After the Cardinals got on the board at No. 6 singles, it was No. 92 Stefanie Tan that extended the lead to 3-1 in favor of the Frogs. She picked up her first win of the spring when she dropped Maso, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
Nichols provided TCU’s fourth team point by knocking off Porte, 6-1, 7-6 (6) at the No. 3 slot. Trailing 6-2 in the tiebreak, the Amarillo, Texas, native rattled off six straight points to put the Frogs up 4-1 and clinch the match.
At No. 5 singles, Sundaram won her second match of the weekend and scored the fifth team point for TCU with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Lamar’s Helene Czudek. No. 114-ranked Smith added the exclamation point when she gutted out a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.
TCU returns to the courts Wednesday when it travels to No. 5 Baylor for a 3:30 p.m., matchup.
