LAS VEGAS – TCU’s women’s tennis team took control of the Mountain West standings Saturday with a 5-2 downing of San Diego State at UNLV’s Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The No. 45-ranked Horned Frogs improved to 11-5 on the year and 3-0 in MW conference play. San Diego State, which came into the match tied with TCU for first place in the league, dropped to 6-10 and 2-1.

“We played well today,” TCU coach Dave Borelli said. “It was extremely windy when we started the doubles and sometimes in this conference it’s about handling the conditions. It comes down to being able to win matches. We’re really starting to gel as a team and we’re in good shape in the standings. It’s really fun right now with the kids playing well.”

TCU won the doubles point to open the match with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. No. 3 tandem Gaby Mastromarino and Simona Parajova improved to 10-1 this spring with an 8-4 bettering of Emma Cioffi and Laura Antonana.

At No. 1 doubles, 79th-ranked Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith won their second-straight match and first in Mountain West play with an 8-5 win over Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison. Their triumph gave TCU a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Parajova continued her run of solid play with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles to stretch her winning streak to five matches. The Zvolen, Slovakia, native was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Cioffi.

Smith picked up her fourth win in a row with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 triumph over Antonana at the third singles position. Federica Denti was a winner for the Frogs at No. 4 singles, a 6-3, 6-1 dismantling of Sierra Ellison.

At No. 6 singles, Mastromarino returned to her winning ways when she took down Kristin Buth, 6-4, 6-2. Mastromarino is TCU’s lone senior on the squad and was an All-Mountain West selection in singles a year ago.

The Frogs return to action Sunday when they face No. 51 UNLV for a 12 p.m., matchup.
