Houston Texans running back Arian Foster is expected to undergo groin surgery in Philadelphia on Friday, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

Foster is headed for Philadelphia for a second opinion with Dr. William Meyers, who is a sports hernia specialist, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported.

Foster likely will be placed on short-term injured reserve, which would allow the Texans to bring him back to practices after Week 6 and into a game after Week 8.

Foster suffered the injury when he pulled up with a limp during a pass play Monday night during the Texans’ first fully padded training camp practice.

Foster, 28, missed 11 games in the past two seasons due to injuries and played in 13 games last year. He finished with 1,246 rushing yards and 327 receiving yards for 13 total touchdowns Houston in 2014.

The Texans had plan to sign former New Orleans Saints running back Pierre Thomas following the news of Foster’s injury.

Hours after Thomas held a successful tryout with the Texans on

Wednesday morning, his agent, Lamont Smith, said via Twitter that Thomas and the Texans were unable to reach a deal.

“Pierre Thomas had a great visit and work out with texans, unfortunately we were unable to agree on terms,” Smith tweeted.

Thomas, 30, was cut in March by the Saints one year into a two-year, $2.404 million contract extension that included a $1.245 million signing bonus. In eight NFL seasons, all with the Saints, Thomas has rushed for 3,745 yards and 28 touchdowns while averaging 4.6 yards per carry. He led the Saints in rushing three years and caught 77 passes for 513 yards in 2013.

The Texans also worked out veteran running back Joe McKnight on Wednesday to try to help fill the void.

“We want someone that can do a little bit of everything,” head coach Bill O’Brien said.

O’Brien said he was uncertain who the Texans would sign at running back.

“As I stand here right now I have not talked to (Texans general manager Rick Smith) yet, but I don’t believe we have signed anybody,” O’Brien said when addressing the media Wednesday. “But I am sure it will happen pretty soon.”

The Texans also have running backs Alfred Blue, Jonathan Grimes, Chris Polk and rookie Kenny Hilliard on their roster.
