AUSTIN, Texas -The 54th-rated Mean Green tennis team fell to No. 17 Nebraska in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 4-0, on Friday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.

The Cornhuskers (24-4) took the first doubles point from North Texas (18-7) in 11 matches, winning the two doubles matches that were able to finish.

“I’m so proud of this team and what they accomplished this season,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “These girls came out and played tough today against a very good Nebraska team and we could not be more proud of the fight they left out here.”

After jumping out to a quick, 2-1 lead on court two, freshman Kseniya Bardabush and Valentina Starkova dropped six of the next eight games and the match, 8-3 to the Huskers’ Veresova and Weatherholt.

Court three had senior Paula Dinuta and freshman Franziska Sprinkmeyer joining forces for the first time all season for an 8-1 loss to Zgierska and Weinreich.

The No. 1 doubles tandem of Nadia Lee and Barbora Vykydalova played the No. 45 doubles tandem of Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein to a back and forth, unfinished match score at 7-6.

Nebraska would continue to jump on the Mean Green in singles play, taking the first set in five of the six matches.

The 47th-ranked singles player in the nation was able to take down Bardabush on court one in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, for the second point of the match.

Minutes later, the Huskers went up 3-0 with a win from Weinreich, the 109th-ranked player, over junior Ilona Serchenko, 6-4, 6-1.

Weinstein would then go on to finish off North Texas on court four as she took down Vykydalova, 6-1, 6-4.

Lee was on pace to capture the first point for the Mean Green as the match was called. She led 100th-ranked Veresova 6-4, 4-1, in the second set with a game point to play.

The loss marks the end of the Mean Green’s season, but the 18 wins North Texas assembled this season was the highest total a Mean Green tennis team has had since 1985.
