DENTON, Texas – The nationally ranked No. 74 North Texas tennis team defeated Middle Tennessee, 4-0, to go undefeated in Sun Belt play this season. Head coach Sujay Lama joins the 200 win club with the victory.

“These seniors have done so much for the program,” Lama said. “It was great to see them finish their last home match on a winning note.”

The Mean Green took the doubles point for the eighth time in the last nine matches. Dané Joubert and Ilona Serchenko handed Alexa Torres and Taylor Mathews an 8-0 loss in the No. 3 doubles position.

Senior duo Valentina Starkova and Barbora Vykydalova defeated Middle Tennessee’s Irina Constantinide and Yuiri Nomoto 8-5 at the No. 1 position. The victory puts Vykydalova in second place on the career wins at the No. 1 doubles position with 44.

“Valentina and Barbora played well in doubles and provided the energy we needed to get a good start,” Lama added. “Dané and Ilona were on fire again and were the spark plug. We emphasized having fun and playing inspired and we got it today.”

Serchenko dropped just two points on her way to defeating Torres, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 5 singles position. Agustina Valenzuela won her fourth straight match at the No. 6 singles position defeating Mathews 6-0, 6-2.

Starkova clinched the match for the Mean Green defeating Flavia Nagayama, 7-6, 6-1, to keep a perfect record in the SBC.

“We are coming together as a team at the right time and now the goal is peaking this week at the conference tournament,” Lama added.

North Texas travels to Lafayette, La., to play in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament April 18-21 hosted by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
