Roberta Vinci of Italy defeated Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic to win the 2012 Texas Tennis Open held at the Hilton DFW Lakes Hotel in Grapevine, Texas.

Vinci, ranked number 23 in the world, used a relentless slice backhand to down the 34th ranked Jankovic.  It is the first WTA singles title of the year for Vinci, and the first career win over Jankovic, a former No. 1 ranked player.

“We are extremely pleased to have two great players in our final tonight,” said Chris Giordano, Texas Tennis Open Tournament Director. “Both Jelena and Roberta played a phenomenal match and put on a wonderful showing for our fans. My congratulations go to Roberta for playing a fantastic match and beating a former world-ranked No. 1 player.”

The Texas Tennis Open, which is part of the WTA, is an “international level” tournament with prize money of $220,000 and features a singles draw of 32 players and a doubles draw of 16 teams.

In doubles action, Marina Erakovic of New Zealand and Great Britain’s Heather Watson defeated American Irina Falconi and Latvia’s Liga Dekmeijere 6-3, 6-0. This is the second title this year for Erakovic and Watson as they won the Bank of the West Classic in California in early July. Both Erakovic and Watson also competed at the London Olympics for their respective countries.
