Major champions Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Webb Simpson and Jordan Spieth are among the headliners of the early commitments for the PGA Tour’s scheduled return at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

The Charles Schwab Challenge is set to take place the week of June 8-14 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

Viktor Hovland and Matt Wolff, who both won last year in their rookie seasons on the PGA Tour, are both set for their first Colonial. Hovland is the reigning Ben Hogan Award winner, topping Wolff and Collin Morikowa for the award in the ceremony held last May during the Charles Schwab Challenge week.

Max Homa, winner of the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship (and social media superstar from his critiquing of golf swings on his Twitter account), Bryson DeChambeau, Brandt Snedeker, Graeme McDowell, Scottie Scheffler and DFW-resident Ryan Palmer are also among the big names committed to coming to Colonial.

Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Alex Noren and Lee Westwood are among the notable international names on the list.

Past champions who have committed include Kevin Kisner, Zach Johnson, Tom Lehman, David Frost and defending champion Kevin Na.

There is still over a month for players to commit to the tournamnet, meaning there is a realistic chance that world No. 1 Rory McIlroy and No. 4 Justin Thomas (was committed to play in last year’s Colonial before a wrist injury that also caused him to miss the PGA Championship) could be making their first trips to Colonial.

No. 2 Jon Rahm (the only two-time Ben Hogan Award winner) has played in the past three Colonials.

No. 3 Brooks Koepka has one Colonial appearance, a runner-up finish in 2018 behind champion Justin Rose.

No. 6 Adam Scott won at Colonial in 2014 when he was the No. 1 player in the world.

As for Tiger and Phil?

Phil Mickelson has two Colonial titles — 2000 and 2008 — and last played the Colonial in 2017.

Tiger Woods has the one trip to Colonial, at the height of Tigermania in May 1997, when he came to Fort Worth on the heels of winning his first Masters and the Byron Nelson. Woods would go on to finish 12-under in a tie for fourth.

With these circumstances and the vast amount of attention that will be focused on this year’s Charles Schwab Challenge, anything is possible.
