OU Wins 2013 Big 12 Tennis Championships

NORMAN, Okla. – On the final day of play at the 2013 Big 12 Tennis Championships, the Oklahoma men and Texas women each won conference titles in front of 559 fans at the Headington Family Tennis Center. This is the second year in a row that the two squads have claimed the championship crowns. Overall, the OU men have two tournament wins while the Longhorn women nabbed their ninth Big 12 Championship title.

On the women’s side, third-seeded Texas cruised to a 4-0 win over No. 5 Oklahoma State. The Longhorns took matches at Nos. 2 and 3 to claim the doubles point and the early lead. UT never looked back, beginning with winning the singles point at No. 6. At the second spot, Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player (MOP) Breaunna Addison claimed a straight set win over OSU’s Meghan Blevins, 6-0, 6-2. Addison finished the tournament undefeated in singles action, going 3-0 at the No. 2 position.

The clinching point came at the top spot as UT’s Aeriel Ellis downed Cowgirl Malika Rose 6-4, 6-2 to bring the trophy home to Austin with the Texas women.

In men’s action, No. 2 Oklahoma won a close battle to knock off No. 1 Baylor, 4-2. The two squads split decisions at the first and second doubles spots, leaving the deciding point down to the No. 3 spot. OU’s tandem of Nick Papac and Lawrence Formentera battled back from a 7-5 deficit to force a tiebreaker set against Baylor’s Tony Lupieri and Julian Lenz. Down 5-1 in the tiebreak set, the OU duo fought to a 6-6 tie before taking the match 9-8 (6).

In singles, Baylor took the first two points and the lead at 2-1. Diego Galeano struck first with a win at No. 5 before No. 1 Patrick Pradella notched the second singles victory over OU’s top player Costin Paval, 6-2, 6-4. In No. 2 singles, Guillermo Alcorta brought one back for the Sooners with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Mate Zsiga of Baylor en route to earning MOP honors on the men’s side. Alcorta, ranked 58th in the nation, claimed both singles points at the No. 2 position for OU during the championship and nabbed a doubles win with partner Axel Alvarez Llamas at No. 2.

Sooner Papac made the score 3-2 in OU’s favor with a No. 6 singles victory before Llamas clinched the win for Oklahoma with his third-spot victory over BU’s Lenz, 7-6(5), 6-2.

The Oklahoma men and Texas women earn automatic berths into the NCAA Team Championships. Big 12 teams will now wait for the NCAA Championship brackets to be released on Tuesday, April 30. The women’s selection show begins at 4 p.m. CT with the men’s following at 4:30 p.m.
