Patrick Reed Wins WGC-Mexico Championship

Patrick Reed managed to block out all of the negativity surrounding the controversy from the Hero World Challenge back in December (following an interview Brooks Koepka did with SiriusXM) and fired a final round 67 to top Bryson DeChambeau by one shot and win the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship.

The win was Reed’s eighth PGA Tour win and his second WGC title.

Reed closed with three straight birdies to overcome a tow shot deficit with four holes to play.

“I mean, I don’t know what he was doing, building sand castles in the sand. But you know, you know where your club is. I mean, I took three months off and I can promise you I know if I touched sand,” Koepka told Sirius XM when asked if he thought Reed had cheated in event in the Bahamas. “If you play the game, you understand the rules. You understand the integrity that goes on. I mean, there’s no room for it.”

Reed did his best to deflect the controversy all week, but it was not going to go away.

“Coming into this week, I knew we were in a good pattern and I knew all I needed to do was continue to try to improve on my golf game, but at the same time just block out all the noise, no matter what it was,” Reed said after winning in Mexico. “I feel like I’ve been able to do that really well throughout my career.”

Reed earned $1.82 million and 550 FedEx Cup points for the win.

Next up on the PGA Tour is the Honda Classic at PGA National Resort & Spa. Notables in the field include Brooks Koepka, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Gary Woodland Tommy Fleetwood, Zach Johnson and Davis Love III.
