Southlake Carroll Defeats Fossil Ridge

Southlake Carroll squeaked out a win over Fossil Ridge (28 to 26)  in front of the homecoming capacity crowd at Dragon Stadium on Friday night.  Southlake scored four touchdowns in the first half but went scoreless in the second.  Fossil Ridge scored touchdowns in every quarter but failed to convert on two extra point attempts which cost them the game.

After building a solid 28 to 13 lead in the first half, Southlake received the ball at the beginning of the third quarter with a chance to put the game out of reach.  Southlake failed to move the ball and for much the of the second half Fossil Ridge used ball control and a balanced attack to keep the Southlake offense on the sideline.

With 5:14 remaining in the game Sheldon Neuse (FR Quarterback) completed a 4-yard pass to Stephen Boswell to bring the Panthers within two points.  Fossil Ridge went for two and Neuse was sacked for a loss.  On their next possession Carroll put together their best drive of the second half moving the ball inside the Ridge 10-yard line.  Carroll went for the TD on fourth down but failed to score with 19 seconds remaining.  The Carroll defense held to secure the win.

Sabian Holmes of Southlake stood out on both offense and defense, scoring on a 67-yard run and blocking an extra point attempt.  Fossil Ridge Quarterback Sheldon Neuse was their best offensive weapon throwing for 190 yards and rushing for 153.

Fossil Ridge had 435 yards of total offense compared to Southlake’s 336.  Similar to the Berkner game, the Southlake offense looked crisp and efficient in the first half but couldn’t get on track in the second half.  The Southlake defense struggled with stopping Fossil Ridge third down conversions.  For Southlake to remain undefeated in district play they will need more consistency on both sides of the ball.
