Southlake Carroll Defeats Richardson Berkner

A large crowd of Dragon fans made their way to the Wildcat/Rams stadium in Dallas on Friday night to see Southlake Carroll defeat Richardson Berkner.  It was a tough game for the Dragon offense, but they were able to score enough first half points to pull off the 20 to 10 victory.  Southlake is now 3-0 on the season, while Berkner falls to 2-1.  The Dragons are off next week and begin district play on September 23rd.

Uncharacteristic of the Southlake offense, they had five fumbles, didn’t score a passing touchdown, and had only 306 total yards, which is well below there season average of 499 per game.  The Berkner pass rush was dialed in, their delayed rush and blitzing kept Kenny Hill (Southlake QB) scrambling and throwing on the run most of the night.  Instead of a smooth pocket quarterback, Hill turned into the leading rusher with 22 carries for 50 yards as he tried to avoid being sacked.

While the Southlake offense had its struggles, the defense stepped up and played their best game of the season.  With the outstanding play of senior linebacker Nash Neu, they held Berkner’s triple option offense to 189 total yards and only one touchdown.

The off week for Southlake couldn’t come at a better time.  Several players are banged up and could use an extra week to recuperate.  Carroll is currently ranked No. 4 among the 5A area teams and No. 9 in the state.  The run for the state championship begins with district play in two weeks.
