Southlake Rolls Over LD Bell

The Southlake offense continued to be dominate Friday night at Dragons Stadium as they gave L. D. Bell their first loss of the year 45-13.  Both teams moved the ball with a good mix of passing and running.  In the end, Bell had more total yards (571) than Southlake (520) but they couldn’t capitalize when they had the opportunity to score.

In the first quarter,L. D. Bell started at their own 20 and capped off a nice drive with a 38 yard run by Shea Smith to the SLC 18.  A ten yard penalty and a stiff Southlake defense forced Bell to settle for a 28 yard field goal with 8:22 remaining.  With five minutes left in the first quarter, Southlake tied the game with a 24-yard field goal by Drew Brown.  After a three and out by Bell, Southlake took over on their own 40-yard line.  Two plays later, Steven Bergman ran 27-yards for the touchdown.  Southlake led 10 to 3 with three minutes remaining in the 1st quarter.  On their next possession Bell quarterback Kyle Romano completed a 38-yard pass to Caleb Rojas who was tackled on the Southlake

22-yard line.  A 15-yard penalty by Bell stopped their momentum and Southlake took over on downs at the end of the quarter.

With 7:47 remaining in the second quarter a 2-yard run by Kyle Romano tied the game.  On Southlake’s next possession they regained the lead (17 to 10) on a 74-yard pass from Kenny Hill to Sabian Holmes.   In the last two minutes of the quarter Southlake scored 14 unanswered points with passes from Hill to his favorite receivers, Peyton Williams and Sabian Holmes.  At the half Southlake was ahead 31 to 10.

Bell returned to their running game on there first drive of the 3rd quarter.  After a 31-yard and 19-yard run, Bell was on the SLC 3-yard line.  Two penalties by Bell moved the ball back to the SLC 23-yard.  Bell made their only score of the second half with a field goal by John David, making the score SLC 31 and Bell 13.  With 6:53 left in the 3rd-qtr Southlake scored on 27-yard pass to Peyton Williams.  Bell had to punt on their next drive and Southlake took over on their own 38-yard line.  Six plays later Kenny Hill takes  it in from the 11-yard line, for a touchdown with 4:51 left in the 3rd quarter.  Southlake had taken complete control of the game with a score of 45 to 13.

In the fourth quarter, Drew Ahmuty took over as quarterback for Southlake.  Neither team scored in the last quarter.  Throughout the game both teams exhibited potent offenses and well balanced attacks.  The game was exciting and punctuated by big plays on both sides.  The difference being Southlake put points on the board after their’s and Bell couldn’t due to deflating penalties.  The stats show two evenly matched teams in almost every category except penalties.  Bell had twice as many and most of them occurred at crucial times in the game.
